Distance Learning Is A More Flexible Choice: Exploding The Myth Of The University

Once upon a time there was University, which stood alone with mystical qualifications named degrees that only top people could hope to acquire. Your three or four year course was all that mattered, it gave you a seat at the top table. Underneath this magisterial realm existed lesser institutions that aspired to be real universities but could never hope to be so special. Among these lesser lights were further education and technical colleges.

In the last twenty years or so however, universities untouchable place at the top of the hierarchy has been brought under scrutiny. Continued bad publicity has questioned the quality of the courses they offer. These, it is argued, are often taught by academics who are largely negligent of their teaching duties, geared up to care only about their research.

Universities have extended their reach, offering more 'modern’ courses such as media studies. There is a widespread perception that this was an error: when universities became trendy was when the Emperor lost his clothes in the eyes of the public. In tandem with this drift has been an important and muscular expansion within the rest of the 'tertiary' education sector, both in terms of provision and also ambition. Shorter and more vocational courses have gained in scope and reputation, becoming sought-after by both students and crucially, by employers also. Courses provided in the sector tend these days to be modular, enabling students to study part-time or through a distance learning programme, meaning they can fit study around other commitments and dip in and out of education as their lives permit.

No longer are you required to take out three or four years out of your life to get a qualification which in many cases hardly prepares you for work at all. If a student needs to get a full degree they can convert their initial qualification, but they can also access the jobs market at points along the way. Essentially, the formerly distinct lines between further and higher education have now become blurred, which reflects a trend in society toward flexibility, retraining, multi-skilling and towards education which is responsive to the needs of society at large and not existing in a bubble or an 'ivory tower'.

The denouement to the story of course comes in the form of university tuition fees, which have sky-rocketed to astronomical proportions. The level and quality offered on university courses is often poor.
In stark contrast, further education, especially the growing online sector has upped its game, working alongside the real-world to deliver courses and content that is targeted, relevant and bang up-to-date. Why then concentrate only on the merits of university?

You may leave saddled with a debt in excess of £50,000 and a degree which in the final analysis can be pretty much useless. In contrast, you can sign up to, say, a Business HND, maybe another online learning course, which allows you to carry on with your career and of course advance your ambitions within it.
