What Is A Sleep Disorder Called Sleep Apnea?
Sleep disorder is a sleep disorder that is characterized by one or more pauses whenever breathing or shallow inhaling and exhaling while sleeping. The word “apnea” refers to the temporarily stop in the breath that you make that last from a couple of seconds to about a minute or more. It might occur about 5 to 30 times an hour. Hypopnea however refers to the abnormal and reduced breathing.
There are at least three known forms of sleep disorder or apnea: the actual central sleep disorder/apnea or the CSA, the other is obstructive sleep disorder/apnea or the OSA and the complex sleep apnea (combination of obstructive and main). Central type of sleep disorder (CSA) happens when our brain is not sending sufficient send a warning sign towards the muscle to take a long breath when it is time already. What this means is there is a sign that absolutely no muscular exertion in the respiratory system. Obstructive sleep disorder/apnea or OSA on the other hand is when there is a muscular effort within the respiratory but there is something that prevents the airway preventing the air from coming in. In a mixed sleep disorder /apnea, both the central and the obstructive characteristics are occurring resulting to the disturbed sleep in the end.
Whether you have CSA, OSA case or both, most of the time the individual are not aware of this difficulty in breathing. This is the reason why few are seeking treatment because they have no idea they are suffering from it. Symptoms could be gift for years without even knowing that it is already a sleep disorder. They tend to be conditioned to the daytime fatigue and sleepiness that they thought it is their daily condition of their body.
With this condition you will not have a daytime fatigue only but vision problems and impaired reaction period will occur. Other area affected by this sleep-deprived condition is trouble in terms of information processing, short term memory. There is also what we call behavioral effects which could be dangerous when you are working or even doing manual labor or operating a machine.
Sleep Apnea could be diagnosed with an overnight sleep test which is known as polysomnogram or commonly called “sleep study”. Symptoms are also evaluated together with the polysomnogram result to determine the severity of the condition and to have a correct treatment plan. Most of the time it is undiagnosed because it could not be detected through the doctor during the usual check-up. There is no blood test on this condition also thus, undetected by most of the patients. Go to http://www.SleepApneia.org for you to learn more about sleep apnea.
